Introduction

The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also called the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), is the part of the British government that gives advice on foreign policy and international relations to the UK Prime Minister, parliament, and other UK Government ministers. The Foreign Office also handles British relations with other countries. It offers consular services to British citizens living abroad, promotes trade and investment opportunities in foreign markets, and works with international groups like NATO and the UN.

About the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO)

The FCDO is the British government department responsible for promoting Britain’s interests abroad. It provides practical advice on how to live in and travel to different countries around the world, including information on entry requirements, health issues, and local laws and customs. The FCDO also helps people traveling or living overseas by providing them with consular assistance (support from the British Embassy or High Commission when something goes wrong) or help if they get into difficulty.

It became its own organization in 1968, when the Foreign Office, the Colonial Office, and the Commonwealth Relations Office all joined together. The UK’s diplomatic service used to be called Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, but this name was changed to reflect its status as a public body in 1998 under New Labour reforms introduced during Tony Blair’s prime ministerial term.
